Story[]

Waking from a dream in which Gandalf fights the Balrog in Moria, Frodo Baggins finds himself, along with Samwise Gamgee, lost in Emyn Muil, near Mordor. They discover that they are being tracked by Gollum, a former bearer of the One Ring. Capturing Gollum, Frodo takes pity and allows him to guide them, reminding Sam that they will need Gollum's help to infiltrate Mordor.

Gollum leads Frodo and Sam through the Dead Marshes to the Black Gate, but recommends that they enter Mordor by another route. Frodo and Sam are captured by the Ithilien Rangers led by Faramir, younger brother of the deceased Boromir.

Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli pursue a group of Uruk-hai to save their companions Merry and Pippin, entering the kingdom of Rohan. The Uruk-hai are ambushed by a group of Rohirrim, allowing Merry and Pippin to escape into Fangorn Forest. Upon meeting Aragorn's group, the leader of the Rohirrim, Éomer, explains that he and his men have been exiled by the king of Rohan, Théoden, who is under the control of Saruman and his servant Grima Wormtongue. Éomer believes that Merry and Pippin died during the raid, but leaves the group two horses. In Fangorn, Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard, an Ent. Convincing Treebeard that they are allies, they are brought to an Ent Council, where the Ents decide not to participate in the coming war. Later, Aragorn's group meets Gandalf, who after his fight against the Balrog was resurrected as Gandalf the White to help save Middle-earth.

Gandalf takes the trio to Rohan's capital, Edoras, where Gandalf frees Théoden from Saruman's control. Aragorn stops Théoden from executing Wormtongue, who flees. Learning of Saruman's plans to destroy Rohan with his Uruk-hai army, Théoden evacuates his citizens to the Hornburg fortress in Helm's Deep. Gandalf sets out to find Éomer and his followers, hoping that they will fight for their restored king. Aragorn befriends Théoden's niece Éowyn, who falls in love with him. When refugees traveling to Helm's Deep are attacked by Orcs riding Saruman's Wargs, Aragorn falls off a cliff and is presumed dead. Brego, Théodred's horse, finds him and rides towards Helm's Deep, witnessing the march of Saruman's army towards the fortress.

Aragorn arrives at Helm's Deep and warns Théoden that Saruman's army is approaching. Théoden prepares for battle despite being greatly outnumbered. A company of Lothlórien Elves arrive to aid the people of Rohan, shortly before Saruman's army attacks the fortress. The Uruk-hai breach the outer wall with explosives and during the subsequent charge, kill the Elven commander, Haldir. The defenders retreat to the keep, where Aragorn convinces Théoden to confront the Uruk-hai in a final charge. At dawn, while the defenders are overwhelmed, Gandalf and Éomer arrive with the Rohirrim, turning the tide of the battle. The surviving Uruk-hai flee to Fangorn Forest and are killed by the trees. Gandalf warns that Sauron will retaliate.

Back with Frodo, he helps Faramir trap Gollum to save him from being killed by the Rangers. Upon learning of the One Ring, Faramir takes his captives to Gondor to bring the Ring to his father Denethor. Passing through the besieged city of Osgiliath, Frodo attempts to explain to Faramir the true nature of the Ring, and Sam explains that Boromir was driven mad by its power. A Nazgûl nearly captures Frodo, who falls under the power of the Ring, but Sam saves him and reminds a disheartened Frodo that they are fighting for what good is left in Middle-earth. Impressed by Frodo's resolve, Faramir frees them. Feeling betrayed by his capture, Gollum decides that he will recover the Ring by taking Frodo to Shelob upon arriving at Cirith Ungol. Meanwhile, Enraged, Treebeard, and the Ents assault Isengard, trapping Saruman in his tower. Gandalf takes Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and King Théoden of Rohan to Isengard, where they are reunited with Merry and Pippin. Gandalf recovers Saruman's palantír and the group returns to Edoras to celebrate their victory at Helm's Deep.

Frodo, who bears the Ring, and Sam continue their journey towards Mordor, unaware that Gollum, now their guide, plans to betray them and keep the Ring for himself.

Characters[]

Differences from the film[]

  • Gollum's first appearance in the film is when he attempts to attack Frodo and Sam and attempts to take the Ring. In the game, he is first seen spying on them.
  • Sam says his line to Frodo: "You don't see it, do you? He's a villian." He says this line in the third film.
  • The Riders of Rohan do not perform their synchronized dance in the film. However, it is similar to the BBC One "Circle" idents.
  • In the game, Éomer wears a cape, while in the films he never wears one.
  • Both the Uruk-hai and Mordor orcs attempt to eat the captured Merry and Pippin, while in the film only the Mordor orcs attempt to do so.
  • In the film, Treebeard carries Merry and Pippin. In the game, he only carries Pippin.
  • In the film, Grishnákh is the only orc to actually enter Fangorn Forest. In the game, he enters and orders other orcs to kill Merry and Pippin.
  • The part of the film where Gandalf talks to Aragorn about his continuing battle with the Balrog at the top of the tower is placed in the Taming Gollum level in the game.
  • Wormtongue is never trapped in cages on Edoras in the film.
  • All events in Ithillien are omitted, although some of the quotes said in the Ithillien scene are said after the Gondor Rangers' attack.
  • In the film, Théoden returns to his normal state, but in the game, Éowyn tears off his beard to remove the curse.
  • In the game, Aragorn says to Gandalf the phrase "Éomer is loyal. His men will return and fight for their king", while in the film he says this to Théoden.
  • In the game, after cutting the orc in half, its legs kicks Aragorn between the legs, causing him to fall off the cliff. In the film, he falls off the cliff when his foot gets caught in the orc's Warg.
  • In the film, Faramir asks Frodo and Sam for their names while he and his men hold him in the Forbidden Pool. In the game, he asks this when meeting with them after the Rangers' attack on the Haradrims.
  • Aragorn arrives at Helm's Deep in the game after Éowyn interrogates Gimli, who said he fell. In the film, he arrives at Helm's Deep, where he is greeted by Legolas and Gimli before warning Théoden about the arrival of the Uruk-hai at nightfall.
  • Théoden tells Rohan soldiers to "get the women and children into the cave", but in the game he tells Éowyn.
  • The Orc horn is heard when the Elves reach Helm's Deep in the game.
  • Peter Jackson throws a trophy at the Uruk-hai instead of a spear.
  • In the game, Ugluk is an orc and is at the Black Gate, while in the film, he is an Uruk-hai and is in the Uruk scouting party that captured Merry and Pippin.
  • In Helm's Deep, Aragorn does not suggest asking Gondor for help when Théoden asks who will come.
  • The Elves arrive at Helm's Deep immediately after Théoden asks Aragorn who will come to aid the Rohirrim.
  • The "toss me" scene is omitted.
  • In the game, Aragorn does not ask Gamling if there is any other way out.
  • In the game, Aragorn says "ride out with me" at the gate, but in the film he says it at the keep.
  • Frodo, Sam and Gollum escape from Osgiliath days before the Orcs arrive in the film. In the game, they are there at the same time. In the book, however, they don't even go to Osgiliath in the first place.
  • Merry and Pippin ride Treebeard as they attack Isengard, but in the game only Pippin rides with Treebeard while Merry rides with another Ent.
  • Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas with Gimli, Éomer, Gamling, Théoden and the Rohan soldiers meet Merry and Pippin after the flood of Isengard in The Return of the King. The game follows the book, except that only Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli and Théoden arrive in Isengard immediately afterwards.
  • Saruman is last seen when he is stabbed by Wormtongue and falls from the top of Orthanc with the Palantir in the Extended Edition of The Return of the King (in the book he kills him in The Shire). In the game, he kicks the Palantir off the balcony halfway to Orthanc, knocking out Pippin and is last seen in his tower.
