The Secret Stairs is the thirteenth level of LEGO The Lord of the Rings. It is the first level of The Return of the King.

Arrival at Minas Morgul[]
- Gollum: The Dead City.
- [Frodo, Sam and Gollum arrive at Minas Morgul]
- Gollum: Very nasty place. Full of... [Frodo begins to stagger towards the city, as if against his will, but Gollum saves him] enemies. Come hobbits. Look, we have found it. The way into Mordor.
- [Frodo staggers back towards the city]
- Sam: Frodo!
- [Sam saves Frodo before he goes to city]
- Frodo: Ah!
Don't go towards the Dead City[]
- [If the player does not control Frodo, he or Sam can say these phrases when he begins to head towards the Dead City]

Hiding from the Orcs[]
- [Lightning strikes the Dead City. The Hobbits panic]
- Frodo and Sam: Ah!
- [As the hobbits continue to climb, the Witch-king, riding his Black Wings, flies over the city and the Black Wings roars. The gates of Minas Morgul open and Mordor Orcs begin to march. Frodo and Sam hide from the Witch-king]

Don't Take a Long Fall[]

- Gollum: Careful, master! Careful! Very far to fall.

He Can't Help Anymore[]
- Sam: Here, just... Let's just rest a bit.
- Frodo: I'm all right. [He stumbles a little]

- Frodo: Get away! [He pushes Sam]

Fleeing from Shelob[]
- [As Frodo and Gollum run, the former turns to look behind him, runs into a bunch of very sticky cobwebs and gets trapped]
- Gollum: Naughty little fly, why does he cry? Caught in a web, soon you'll be... eaten.
- [Before Shelob eats him, Frodo manages to escape the net with Sting]

An Unforgettable Forgiveness[]
- [Frodo and Gollum manage to escape from Shelob, but the two begin to fight over the Ring]
- Frodo: Aaahhh!
- Gollum: Sméagol wouldn't hurt master. The precious made us do it!
- [They stop fighting]
- Frodo: I have to destroy it, Sméagol.
- Gollum: No! [He leaps towards Frodo in an attempt to retrieve the Ring, but Frodo dodges and drops him] AAAAHHHH!
- [As Sam climbs up, he says goodbye to Gollum as he falls]

Story[]
Frodo, Sam and Gollum witness how the Witch-king of Angmar, lord of the nine Nazgûl, set out for Gondor with his army of Orcs. Gollum plots to frame Sam for eating food and desiring the Ring; Influenced by the growing power of the Ring, Frodo falls for the deception and orders Sam to go home. Gollum then tricks Frodo into venturing into the lair of the giant spider Shelob. Frodo narrowly escapes and confronts Gollum, who falls into a chasm after a fight.
Walkthrough[]
Level Prelude[]
After completing the second episode, you will appear on the road to Osgiliath with Frodo, Sam and Gollum. If you press the alternate attack button, you can switch to Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf the White. Following from Frodo, Sam and Gollum's perspective will take you to the Secret Stairs level, while following Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf's perspective will take you to the Paths of the Dead level. It is recommended to follow from Frodo, Sam and Gollum's perspective first.
From Frodo, Sam, and Gollum's perspective, switch to Gollum and climb the nearby wall to the top to start this level.
Level Walkthrough[]
You start in Minas Morgul, near the path to the Dead City. If you don't control Frodo, he will head towards the city alone and cause damage. Therefore, it is recommended to have him as your main character. Go to the dark cave on the left side of the path and use Frodo's Flask to illuminate it. As long as Frodo provides light, switch to Sam and dig through the loose dirt for bricks. Use them to build a mechanism on the statue on the left. Next, go to the far left of the area, switch to Gollum to climb a wall, and destroy the wood near the rock on the right so the others can climb up. Switch to Sam, dig up a skull and throw it into the plants to make the rocks fall and reveal a hook. Use Sam's Elven Rope on it to pull up a plant and use it as a platform. Then, switch to Frodo, jump to the other side (where the mosaic is) and use the flask to light up the cave. Destroy an object behind a rock and use its tiles to build the floor there. Push the stone down and build the first part of the stairs with its remains. Returning to the place of the statues, push the mechanism built to turn the statue on the left and reveal a hook. Use Sam's Elven Rope on it to make the statue fall and use its remains to build wood at the bottom of the statue on the right. Switch to Sam and set fire to the wood built to make the statue on the right fall. Lastly, use the remains of the statue to build the second part of the stairs and use the stairs to reach the next area.
In the next area, go to the right, jump over the first cliff and cross the second using the handhold. On the other side, go up the stairs and go to the far right to find loose dirt. Dig into it with Sam to excavate tiles and build the floor. Then, use Frodo's Flask to illuminate the dark area in front of you, revealing a wall that Gollum can climb. Switch to Gollum, climb the wall and push a rock from there. Push the rock to the right and use it to jump to the next set of stairs. At the top of the stairs, go into the dark cave on the right side. Use Frodo's Flask to illuminate it and find a breakable chest. Destroy it to grab a stone and use it to break a spider web on the left side. This will reveal a hook. Use Sam's Elven Rope on it to pull up a rock and then use the handholds to cross the cliff and reach the next set of stairs. Climb the stairs, destroy the cobwebs in front of a wall, and use Gollum to scale the wall and reach the rock ledge above you. There, break the skeleton of the wall and build a catapult with its pieces. Jump over the shield to push the rock and destroy the rock barrier below the ledge to reveal a hatch. Switch back to Sam and use the hatch to reach a small cave and then place a plant. The plant will pass through the stone and cause the rock structures to fall. Build a rock ladder to climb the flight of stairs above and continue climbing it to reach the next area.
In the next area, you will navigate through a cave with Frodo's Flask giving you light. You must control Frodo, since his light can scare away the small spiders. It is also impossible to get lots. There is only one path that leads to the destination. If you find yourself blocked by objects lying on the ground, simply destroy them. After a short walk through the cave, you will reach a larger cave. Switch to Gollum and climb the wall ahead. Push a stone down to destroy several sturdy rocks and reveal a hatch that Frodo can use to reach the ledge above. Switch back to Frodo and use the newly created hatch to continue forward. Destroy some cobwebs and scare away the little spiders with Frodo's flask and you'll reach another dead end. Destroy the bones in front of you and build handholds with them. At the top of the ledge, scare away the spiders and destroy all the objects around you. Build a bucket with bones, into which you will have to throw three stones. It will tear off the net and open you to the final area.
In the final area, you will have to escape from Shelob. While automatically escaping, you can destroy objects you see to get more studs. If you stay on the left side, you can get three very valuable studs: two blue and one purple. The level will end when you reach the end of the chase.
Collectables[]
S means that the collectible can be obtained both in Story and in Free Play. F means the collectible can only be obtained in Free Play.
- Minikit Chests
- (F) On the left side of the first area, you will find a cracked tile. Use a character with axe to destroy it and obtain this minikit.
- (S) At the end of the first area, you'll see some rocks on the right side of the stairs. Destroy them and then use a gardener character to place a plant and reveal this minikit.
- (S) Through the second area, destroy five plants to obtain this minikit:
- At the beginning of the area, you will find this plant on the right side.
- Located right in the dark area that contains the first climbable wall in the area.
- Outside the dark cave you reach after climbing the third flight of stairs.
- Near the end of the area, after using the hatch, you will find this plant on the right.
- Located below the rocky ledge where you found the previous plant.
- (F) At the beginning of the second area, use an archer character to shoot an arrow at the target on the left side. Then, swing on it and use the bar to jump further and reach this minikit on a handhold.
- (F) Before you go up the fourth set of stairs in the second area, you'll see a silver chest on the left. Destroy it with the Berserker's bombs and build a mobile chair with its remains. Get on it and don't get off it until you reach this minikit at the top of the flight of stairs.
- (F) As you continue through the tunnels of the third area, in the first larger room on the left, you will see a minikit behind a spider web on the wall. Use a gardener character to place a plant underneath and destroy the spider web with this minikit.
- (F) In the second large room of the third area, right next to the climbable wall, you will see this minikit behind a silver spider web. Use the Berserker's bombs to destroy it and obtain this minikit.
- (S) Just beyond the climbable wall in the third area, you'll see this minikit hanging from a spider web on the right side. Hit the skeleton hanging from the spider web to drop this minikit and get it.
- (F) Near the end of the third area, you'll see two Morgul objects. Of the two Morgul objects, destroy the one on the right side with a character capable of destroying Morgul objects. This will reveal loose soil. Use a digger character to dig up some bricks and use them to build a fly. Then, use a character with magic to place it above you on the left wall, where the purple symbol is. The fly will drop studs, until finally dying upon touching the ground, revealing this minikit.
- (S) While escaping from Shelob in the final area, destroy three piles of skulls to obtain this minikit. Be careful not to miss one.
- At the beginning of the chase, stay on the right side to destroy the first one.
- After destroying the previous one, stay on the left side to destroy the second one, a little before the very valuable studs.
- After destroying the previous one, stay on the right side to destroy the third and final one, before reaching the end of the level.
- Treasures
- Surefooted Greaves
- (F) At the beginning of the level, use an archer character to shoot the target near the statue on the left and then use a tracker character to pick up the item. As you follow the green paths, you will need to search for three more items before reaching the place where this treasure is buried. When you find this treasure, save it in your inventory.
- Muddy Armor
- (F) To the right of the second climbable wall in the second area, you will find a cracked tile. Use a character with axe to destroy it, build a crane and turn its crank to catch this treasure. Save it to your inventory.
- Spider Fang
- (F) As you go through the cave in the third area, you will see an orange handle on the left side. Use a character with super strength to pull it and reveal this treasure.

- (S) On the left side of the cave where you find the sixth minikit, there is a glowing tunnel blocked by a spider web. Head to the end destroying the spider web and then the rocks to find this Blacksmith Design.

Unlockables[]
The minikit model in this level is the Dead City. In The Black Gate you can buy a Mordor Orc. You will also be able to continue to Cirith Ungol. After collecting all three treasures, you will be able to take a pair of Surefooted Greaves, a Muddy Armor, and a Spider Fang from your inventory. After collecting the Blacksmith Design, you will be able to craft a Mithril Squeak Sword.
