Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third episode of LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4.

Story[]

In 1993, Harry Potter spends another dissatisfying summer with the Dursleys. Hoping to be expelled for using magic outside of school, Harry flees with his belongings.

The Knight Bus takes Harry to the Leaky Cauldron, where Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge assures Harry that he will not be punished. Reuniting with his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, Harry learns that Sirius Black, a convicted supporter of Lord Voldemort, has escaped Azkaban Prison and intends to kill him. During the journey to Hogwarts, the Hogwarts Express is accosted by Dementors, ghostly prison guards searching for Black. One enters Harry's compartment, causing him to pass out, but the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Remus Lupin, repels it with a Patronus Charm. At Hogwarts, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore announces that Dementors will patrol the school until Black is captured.

Rubeus Hagrid is appointed Care of Magical Creatures teacher, but his first class goes awry when Draco Malfoy provokes a Hippogriff named Buckbeak into attacking him, and his father, Lucius, has Buckbeak sentenced to death. Returning to Gryffindor Tower, the students find that the Fat Lady's portrait has been attacked, and the terrified Fat Lady warns Dumbledore that Black entered the castle. During a stormy Quidditch match, the Dementors cause Harry to fall off his broom, which is destroyed by the Whomping Willow. Fred and George catch him trying to visit Hogsmeade and give him the Marauder's Map.

Using the map, Harry sneaks into Hogsmeade and learns that Black is his godfather, but he divulged the Potters' whereabouts to Voldemort and murdered their mutual friend Peter Pettigrew. After divination class, he sees Professor Trelawney go into a trance and prophesies that the Dark Lord will return. Watching Buckbeak's execution, Ron's pet rat Scabbers bites him and escapes, but a large black dog drags them both into a hole at the base of the Whomping Willow. This leads the trio through an underground passage to the Shrieking Shack, where the dog is revealed to be Black, an Animagus who can transform into an animal.

Lupin appears, embracing Black as an old friend before revealing himself to be a werewolf. Snape arrives to stop Black, but is knocked unconscious by Harry's disarming spell. Lupin and Black reveal that Scabbers is actually the Animagus form of Pettigrew, who betrayed Harry's parents, faked his death and framed Black for his own crimes. Turning Pettigrew back into human form, the group returns to the castle, but the full moon causes Lupine to transform and Pettigrew escapes. As Black fights off Lupin in their animal forms, Dementors attack Black and Harry, but an unseen figure casts a powerful Patronus. Harry falls unconscious and wakes up in the hospital wing with Dumbledore and Hermione.

Learning that Black has been captured and sentenced to the Dementor's Kiss, Harry and Hermione act on Dumbledore's advice and use Hermione's Time-Turner, which she was given to attend several classes at once, to go three hours back in time. They see themselves reliving the events of the night and free Buckbeak from execution. Spotting the past Harry and Black being attacked by Dementors, Harry rescues them using a Patronus charm and realizes he was the unseen figure who saved them earlier. He and Hermione free Black, who flies away on Buckbeak, still a fugitive without proof of his innocence. Harry and Hermione return to the hospital wing and rejoin their own timeline.

Exposed as a werewolf, Lupin resigns from teaching and returns the Marauder's Map to Harry. Black sends Harry a Firebolt broomstick, which he happily takes for a ride.

Differences from the movie and book[]

  • Bill Weasley and Charlie Weasley are absent, probably because the Weasley family's trip to Egypt is omitted.
  • Ripper the bulldog is absent.
  • Aunt Marge starts to mention Harry's parents after she finds a picture of them.
  • In the book and film, the black dog appears in front of Harry out from behind the bushes. But in the game, he is seen on a playground roundabout.
  • Stan Shunpike does not appear as the Knight Bus conductor, but he is a playable character.
  • When the Knight Bus passes between two London Buses it does not squeeze itself as well as everything in it like in the film. Instead it rebuilds itself, arranging the bricks so it is taller and thinner.
  • The Knight Bus doesn't stop to let an elder lady cross the street.
  • Cornelius Fudge does not talk to Harry when he arrives at The Leaky Cauldron.
  • For co-op purposes, Arthur Weasley fights the Monster Book of Monsters with Harry.
  • Buckbeak does not appear to break Malfoy's arm, since he is able to use it to point at Hagrid without effort.
  • In the book and film, Malfoy calls Buckbeak, "a great ugly brute." But in the game, Malfoy provokes Buckbeak by throwing a chicken leg at him.
  • Unlike the film, Harry is seen going through the passage to Honeydukes. Also, Fred and George acompany him through the passage.
  • Kellah and Bem are absent.
  • The Security Trolls are featured unlike the film.
  • Harry does not have to wear his Invisibility Cloak unlike in the Book or the Film; Draco does not run to tell on Harry, unlike the events in the Book, because that would cause confusion.
  • In the film, Harry throws snowballs from under the Invisibility Cloak at Draco for calling Hermione a mudblood. In the game Draco makes an igloo and uses it like a tank to shoot snowballs back.
  • When Harry and Hermione are trying to warn Hagrid and the trio that Dumbledore, Fudge, and Macnair are coming, they throw more than just a pebble. They also throw a spoon and many other objects.
  • When Hagrid peaks out of the window, Harry is seen dressed as a scarecrow.
  • When Harry tries to get Buckbeak to follow him, he pushes him. In the film, Hermione uses a dead ferret to lure Buckbeak, but in the game, Hermione uses a chicken leg instead.
  • When Harry and Hermione lure Lupin to them, they play a werewolf howl on record recorder, and Lupin walks over with hearts around his head.
  • When Harry casts Expecto Patronum on Dementors, they instantly vanish, instead of being repelled away like in the book and film (although in the cutscenes they are simply repelled).
  • In the film, Harry defeats all of the dementors at one time, but he has to defeat them individually in the game.
  • Harry and Hermione only ride Buckbeak up to a tower near where Sirius was being held, not the full way there.
  • In the final boss battle, Dementors have to be fought. In the film, Harry and Hermione just save Sirius without a battle.
  • Lord Voldemort's boggart isn't his own dead body, but it's Harry alive and well.
