The Black Gate is the seventeenth level of LEGO The Lord of the Rings. It is the fifth level of The Return of the King.

The Beginning of the Final Battle[]

Aragorn: Let the Lord of the Black Land come forth!
[The Black Gate opens and many Orcs and a Mountain Troll arrive. Aragorn walks towards the Gondor Soldiers]
Aragorn: By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!
[All the soldiers draw their swords]
Merry: [He draws his sword] AARRGGGHHH!
Pippin: [He draws his sword] AARRGGGHHH!
[All the soldiers begin to fight against the Orcs]

Attack of the Eagles[]

[The Troll wearing armor dies, while Legolas and Gimli make sounds of victory]
Gandalf the White: AAAHHH! [He hits an Orc, but notices a Black Wings approaching]
[Gandalf sees a moth flying in front of his face and says something to Aragorn after killing two Orcs. In the sky, the screams of the Eagles are heard as several large Eagles appear, one of which attacks the Black Wings that is heading towards Gandalf]
Pippin: Eagles! The Eagles are coming!
[The large Eagles attack the Black Wings, drawing attention to Sauron. The Eye of Sauron changes its vision from Mount Doom to The Black Gate]
[The level ends]

Story[]

Aragorn decides to march towards Mordor to distract Sauron from the now extremely weak Frodo and Sam; All of Sauron's remaining forces march to confront Aragorn's distraction, allowing the hobbits to reach Mount Doom.

Walkthrough[]

Level Prelude[]

After completing the previous level, you will appear in Osgiliath with Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf the White. If you have not completed the levels The Secret Stairs and Cirith Ungol first, Sauron's gaze will block your path to The Black Gate. When you complete those two levels, Sauron will lock Mount Doom for Frodo and Sam, allowing you to continue from the perspective of Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf.

From the perspective of Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf, follow the path of ghost studs. From the perspective of Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf, follow the path of ghost studs and you will see a corsair ship blocking your path. Switch to Legolas and shoot an arrow at a target to drop two planks, then use them next to the ship as a bridge. Continue riding a horse to run faster and follow the path of ghost studs until you see a plank in The Dead Marshes. It is possible to walk through it until you cross to the other side on horseback. You will see four targets tied to plants. Shoot all four of them with Legolas's bow, get off the horse, and then use the lily pads as platforms to get to the other side. Finally, follow the path of ghost studs until you reach The Black Gate, where you will start this level.

Level Walkthrough[]

At the beginning of the level, you will have to face a Mountain Troll, who will throw a rock with a broken tile at you in the middle of the area. Switch to Gimli, stand on the cracked tile, jump on it and destroy it to build a platform. Stand on it and wait for the Troll to make a roar. When the Troll roars, dodge its chain attack quickly and then take damage with the platform. You will see that three catapults in the background will launch stones in the middle of the area. Destroy those three stones to build another platform. Do the same as you did with the previous platform to deal second damage to the Troll. You'll see that three catapults on the right side will launch Morgul objects in the middle of the area. Switch to Aragorn and destroy those three Morgul objects to build one more platform. Do the same thing again as you did with the previous two platforms and you will cause one last damage to the Troll, killing it. You will face a Ringwraith in its Black Wings. Dodge its attacks and wait for its Black Wings to show its exposed belly for a long time. Switch to Legolas and shoot an arrow at the target in the exposed belly to scare away the Black Wings. You will see a Troll on the left side of the area. Go towards it and the battle will move to the left of the gate. This Troll will have bracelets equipped. Destroy them using Legolas' bow. This will anger the Troll and destroy the stones on the left side. Build a platform near a hatch at the top and enter the bottom hatch with Merry, Pippin, or Gimli. Then, jump to the ledge on the right, stand on a circle and press the action button to get on the Troll. Press the attack button several times to hit the Troll until it is stunned. Switch to Legolas and shoot an arrow at the Troll's head to kill it. You will face the Black Wings again. Its fight is identical to the previous one. You will face a Troll wearing Morgul armor. This Troll is resistant to your attacks, so dodge its attacks until it gets tired. When it is tired, switch to Aragorn, stand on the yellow circle next to it and press the action button to destroy the first half of the armor. Repeat this same process a second time to break the second half of the armor and make the Troll flee to the left. Follow it and the battle will move to the far left of the area. The Troll will now use a chain. Build a hole in the upper left corner, switch to Legolas and shoot three arrows into three holes in the wall to create bars. Swing on them to reach the rocky ledge on the right and destroy a stone to build a platform. Stand on the platform, wait for the Troll to roar, and dodge his chain attack so that the Troll's chain gets stuck on the platform. Finally, jump onto the chain and shoot an arrow at the Troll's head to defeat it and finish the level.

S means that the collectible can be obtained both in Story and in Free Play. F means the collectible can only be obtained in Free Play.

  • Minikit Chests
    1. (S) While you are in the middle of the area, you will see five Orc archers in the background. Defeat them with a character who can shoot from a distance to obtain this minikit.
    2. (F) On the left side of the gate, you'll see a climbable wall that will lead you to a minikit. Climb it with a climbing character to reach this minikit.
    3. (F) When you face the second Troll, you will see this minikit inside a box on the right side. Pull the orange handle on the box with a character with super strength to get this minikit.
    4. (F) In the second phase against the third Troll, you will find this minikit on a high platform on the left side. Use a character with Elven Rope to reach the platform and reach this minikit.
    5. (F) In the same phase against the same Troll, you will see some silver boulders in the north. Destroy them with the Berserker's bombs to enter a special area. There, on the left side, destroy a barrel and turn a crank to lower a path and reveal this minikit.
    6. (F) In the special area, go right and you will find a pig. Hop on it and cross six flags to get this minikit.
    7. (F) In the corral where you get the previous minikit, use a character capable of destroying Morgul objects to destroy three Morgul objects and find this minikit.
    8. (F) On the right side of the special area, use an archer character to shoot a target and drop this minikit to obtain it.
    9. (F) On the right side of the special area, you will find a place to farm. Use a gardener character to place a plant and grow a carrot. A rabbit will eat the carrot and, as a reward, dig up this minikit.
    10. (S) On the rocky ledge of the second phase against the third Troll, use a character with axe to destroy a broken slab and obtain this minikit. It is possible to obtain this minikit in Story by grabbing Gimli and then throwing him at Legolas while he is on the rocky ledge.
  • Treasures
    1. Handprint Breastplate
      • (F) Near the box with the third minikit, you will find loose dirt. Dig on it with a digger character to get a key. Then, use a character with Elven Rope to pull a hook attached to boulders. Finally, use any variant of Sam to light a fire on a piece of wood and drop a chest. Use the key to open the chest and find this treasure.
    2. Flaming Hat
      • (F) In the second phase against the third Troll, you will find loose dirt on the left side. Dig on it with a digger character to get this treasure.
    3. Elven Lute
      • (F) At the far right of the special area, use a character with super strength to pull an orange handle and open the closet where you will find this treasure.
  • Blacksmith Design
    • Mithril Tinderbox
      • (F) At the place where you get the first treasure, go left to find this Blacksmith Design behind some rocks.

Unlockables[]

The minikit model in this level is The Black Gate. After completing the level, you unlock Aragorn (Gondor Armor) and Pippin (Gondor Armor). In Middle-earth you will be able to continue to Mount Doom. After collecting all three treasures, you will be able to take a Handprint Breastplate, a Flaming Hat, and an Elven Lute from your inventory. After collecting the Blacksmith Design, you will be able to craft a Mithril Tinderbox.
