LEGO Racers 2 is a LEGO-themed racing video game developed by Attention to Detail, published by LEGO Software and distributed in North America by Electronic Arts. It was first released in September 2001 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance. It is the sequel to the 1999 game LEGO Racers and received a 7.8/10 rating upon release for PC, however the game was criticized for using gibberish in place of actual voice acting in cutscenes.

Unlike the first game, LEGO Racers 2 features an open world environment for the player to drive around in. The overworlds contain a total of 35 Gold Bricks for the player to collect as well as side missions which reward car bonuses (Upgrading Grip, Shield or Power) if successful. Collecting enough Gold Bricks from one-on-one races and the overworld will allow the player to access Jump Points to access the next world Xalax and a rematch with Rocket Racer. However, the player must defeat all their rivals before accessing the Jump Point.

Plot[]

After his defeat in the first game, Rocket Racer is depressed by the news of him getting second place. That is until a newspaper about a planet named Xalax holding a galactic race flies by, giving him the motivation to reclaim his title as champion. Now the fastest racer in the entire galaxy, Rocket Racer once again challenges the player to try and beat him.

Sparky acts as the player's guide through their racing journey as they become the new galactic race champion. He and the player travel through four different worlds before arriving on Xalax, with each of those worlds containing two side missions and three hidden Gold Bricks for the player to collect, the side missions are accessed by a tornado in the overworld and the player must get first place in all the races in order to be rewarded with their Gold Brick.

Once the player has completed all the world's races, it's finally time for the rematch against Rocket Racer. Once the player wins, Rocket Racer congratulates the player and awards them with the Galactic Racing Championship trophy and tells them they'll be back to reclaim it one day. After the ceremony, all the bosses from the previous worlds return to congratulate the player too for becoming the new best racer in the galaxy, as well as the player giving Sparky credit to helping them get to where they are now.

Worlds[]

Sandy Bay[]

The first level which also acts as the hub world, a town by a sandy beach filled with palm trees. There are no circuit races to complete here but four one on one races with the different residents to see who will represent Sandy Bay in the Galactic Racing Championship. The player can access the Jump Points in this overworld to access the other worlds to race in.

The side mission involves the player being a taxi driver to the Sandy Bay citizens and escort them to their locations before time runs out. The player can only pick up one customer at a time, they must escort three people on the first mission and six on the second.

Dino Island[]

Based on the Lego Adventurer's theme of the same name, a volcanic island full of dinosaurs. The player takes a blimp from Sandy Bay to here. There are four circuit races to complete before facing off in a one on one race against Sam Sinister, AKA Baron Von Barron from the last game to win his turbo powered engine.

The side mission now is that Johnny Thunder from the last game and his partner, Pippin Reed are out of fuel for their own car and need the player's help to collect fuel barrels scattered throughout the island before time runs out, the player must drive through the barrels to collect them and then return to Johnny and Pippin to drop them off. The player can only collect five barrels at a time and must avoid guard vehicles as they drive. The player must deliver six barrels on the first mission and eight on the second.

Mars[]

Based on the Life on Mars theme, a red, rocky planet populated by Martians and Mars rovers. The player takes a space shuttle from Sandy Bay to here. Like before the player must win four circuit races before accessing the one on one race against Reigel the Martian to obtain his shield generator.

The side mission for this world is Doc from Life on Mars requires alien power crystals to recharge his space shuttle. The rules are the same as the fuel collecting side mission previously, they can only collect five crystals at a time and must avoid aliens guarding their crystals. The player must collect ten crystals in both missions.

Arctic[]

Based on the Lego City Arctic subtheme filled with igloos and people in parkas. The player takes a helicopter from Sandy Bay to here. As usual the player must complete four circuit races before accessing the one on one race against The Berg to obtain its super wheels.

The side mission in this world is Doc requiring the player to collect weather balloons that have been laying out in the open during a storm before time runs out. The player can only collect five balloons at a time and they more balloons they have in their possession, the floatier their car will become, as well as having to avoid the guard vehicles. The player must collect eight balloons in both missions.

Xalax[]

Based on the Xalax Racers subtheme, a purple planet surrounded by cheering crowds and filled with lava pits. The player travels through a portal from Sandy Bay to here. Unlike the previous worlds where the player got to race characters across multiple subthemes, the Xalax races feature only the inhabitants of the planet, known as Ramas as competitors in the circuit races. Just like before, the player must complete four circuit racers before finally racing one on one with Rocket Racer.

The final side mission involves a Rama named Warrior hosting training races where the player must collect drones scattered around the arena and take them to the starting line before time runs out. The drones all move around the track and the player must also avoid Ramas guarding certain ones. As per usual the player can only carry five drones at a time, they collect eight on the first mission and ten on the second.

Version Differences[]

GBA[]

  • The opening cutscene has Rocket Racer telling the player directly how getting second place in the first game made him never want to race again until he sees the Xalax racing poster
  • The car building mechanic was removed and instead the player races in the same car through the entire game
  • The hub worlds are designed like a world map with points indicating either a race or minigame the player can access
  • Sandy Bay has been renamed Brickerton, but some characters still refer to it as Sandy Bay
  • The car repairing pits have been replaced with green bricks the player must collect to repair damaged cars

Trivia[]

  • If the player collects all 35 Gold Bricks, there's now a firework show in the middle of the Sandy Bay city once the player returns.
  • The Arctic overworld features different music from the PC to the PS2 versions
  • Originally the game would have Rocket Racer as a mentor role to the new racer while the villain would be a new character named Baron Rosso who would have been a corporate villain.
    • Professor Voltage from Legoland was also planned to be the player's guide before being replaced with Sparky.
