LEGO Island LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge

LEGO Island is a first person open world sandbox game developed by Mindscape and released on September 26, 1997, for Microsoft Windows. In LEGO Island, the player can pick between five different characters: Pepper Roni, a pizza-delivery boy, Mama or Papa Brickolini, his adoptive parents and Nick or Laura Brick, police officer siblings, on an open-world island.

Development[]

Two years before the game was released, Mindscape approached Lego at the New York Toy Fair to suggest a new video game. The development team was formed once the project was greenlit in 1995-96, with the working title, Adventures on LEGO Island being announced at E3 of 1996.

Story[]

The main story of LEGO Island involves Pepper Roni trying to stop The Brickster, an escaped criminal from destroying LEGO Island. Although it's entirely optional as the game is about exploring the island, experiencing all the wacky hijinks the characters get up to as the player walks around.

The Infomaniac acts as your guide as the player traverses the island, he remains at the Information Center and tells the player to sign in before they can go explore. He will sometimes appear in front of the player on the island itself to give them instructions on how to drive certain vehicles or about the minigames in each of the buildings.

Locations[]

There are eight locations the player can visit around the island

Information Center[]

Island Map

A map showing off the entire island and its highlights

Where the game starts, the player can sign in with the big blue brick book and then change which character they want to play as at the front desk, or click on the door to the right to exit the program. It can also be accessed anytime the player clicks on a white circle with a red I in the center.

The right side of the center shows off the Score Cube, showing off how well the player did in the minigames with each character, red being first place, blue being second and yellow third.

The left side of the center leads to the elevator where the player can either go to the observation deck or check the second level to see a minifigure swimming around in the ocean.

Observation Deck[]

Taking the elevator to the top floor will give the player a full view of the island, as well as be able to change the colour of the sky and how dark it is.

Gas Station[]

Bill Ding

Bill Ding and the dune buggy

Here the player can help Nancy and Nubby drive a tow truck to the race track or build a dune buggy to drive around the island with

Beach[]

Here the player can build a jet-ski and drive around the ocean surrounding the island. Clicking on the buoy will let the player enter a race around the island with two other jet-skiiers, dodging sharks and other boats while making occasional jumps

Pizzaria[]

Here the player can deliver pizzas for Mama and Papa or listen to Mama play her piano. The jukebox can also be clicked on to play a selection of songs written for the game that will continue to play no matter where the player is, unlike the usual soundtrack which changes depending on the location

Racetrack[]

Here the player can build a racecar and take part in a F-1 race against two other racers

Residential Neighborhood[]

There are no minigames here but the player can click around to change the trees/flowers around as well as access a hidden cave where a ghost pirate named Captain Click resides.

Police Station[]

Here the player can build the police helicopter to fly around the island or check out the jail cell to interact with The Brickster. The helicopter is required for the final mission of the game to start

Hospital[]

Here the player can help Enter and Return get to the Pizzeria to stop a man from choking and to the Police Station to save a man trying to avoid an angry parrot. The order of who to save first is up to the player

If the player takes too long with the delivery, tow truck or ambulance minigames, The Infomaniac will remind the player where to go over the radio.

Pizza Delivery[]

By going to the pizzeria and clicking on Papa (or Mama if the player is playing as him), he will give you a pizza to deliver to one of the locations on the island.

Delivery

Mama and Papa at the pizzeria

  • Mama delivers to Nick at the police station
  • Papa delivers to Studs Lincoln at the racetrack
  • Nick delivers to Nubby Stevens at the gas station
  • Laura delivers to Enter and Return at the hospital
  • Pepper delivers to The Brickster at the jail cell, although if the player hasn't build the helicopter yet, he won't escape

Driving the ambulance[]

Clicking on the hospital will have Dr. Clickitt request you escort Enter and Return to two locations that require the hospital's aid (the police station and the pizzeria) and then return the ambulance to the hospital

Driving the tow truck[]

The gas station is where Nubby will ask you to take the tow truck to the racetrack and tow Studs Lincoln's car off the track, afterwards the player must return the truck to the gas station

F-1 Race[]

The player will race two laps around an underground racetrack against two other racers, the track's obstacles consist of road blocks, skeletons on giant pizzas, a massive skeleton that could kick the player further back on the track if they don't time going under its legs correctly and a giant octopus near the end

Jet-Ski Race[]

Clicking on the buoy at the beach will start a two lap race around the island with two other racers, the player must avoid sharks, pyramids with question marks rotating around some turns, random boaters and Legos rodeoing sharks

Catching The Brickster[]

After building the helicopter and delivering a pizza to The Brickster, he will use the fumes to break out and hijacks the helicopter to steal the red power brick that sits atop the Information Center to De-Brick the island. Pepper then must travel to the residential area to catch up to Nick and Laura Brick, who tell him that the Brickster has taken apart the helicopter and stolen the ambulance.

Then the player must chase after the ambulance while picking up pieces of the helicopter, after a while The Brickster will go hide in the secret cave while Pepper picks up the rest of the scattered pieces. Once the helicopter is rebuilt the player must guide Nick and Laura to The Brickster so he can be arrested.

The helicopter will shoot pizzas to slow down The Brickster and doughnuts to speed up Nick and Laura. Depending on if The Brickster is caught or not will determine the ending.

Features[]

Jukebox[]

Clicking on the jukebox next to the pizzeria will open a list of songs one can listen to while walking around the island.

Jukebox

Brick by brick, tock by tick, no matter how thin, no matter how thick

(The last two songs are instrumentals)

Endings[]

LEGO Island contains two endings which the player encounters depending on what they do when attempting to stop The Brickster. Although both endings result in him being thrown back in jail in the end.

Good[]

If the player manages to guide Nick or Laura over to The Brickster before he destroys everything, the good ending will play with him being arrested and everyone celebrating Pepper saving the island. The player is then transported back to the Information Center with The Infomaniac congratulating them for saving the island

Bad[]

If The Brickster manages to reach the pizzeria and destroy it, the bad ending will play with the citizens of Lego Island lamenting over everything being destroyed while The Brickster cackles over his triumph. The player is then transported back to the Information Center with The Infomaniac comforting the player that they will be able to rebuild the island despite the destruction caused.

Reception[]

The game was widely praised upon its launch, winning several game awards and selling over a million copies. The overall review score being a 4.5/5

Trivia[]

  • The characters all move like actual Lego minifigures would move and joke about how they lack elbows. In every following game the characters all move more fluidly
  • One of Dr. Clickitt's lines during the ambulance driving mission references the game's original title, Adventures On Lego Island.
  • Several sequels were planned directly after the game's release, all in the same gameplay style. One of which called LEGO Sea Challenge, unfortunately they were all scrapped when Mindscape laid off all its workers
  • The bad ending was originally going to be longer and feature more scenes of the Lego Island citizens looking depressed from all the destruction. It was cut due to being too scary for kids. To date this, LEGO Rock Raiders and LEGO DC Super-Villains are the only three LEGO games with multiple endings.
