LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is a LEGO video game that is based on the first three Indiana Jones films. It was released in June 2008 and was developed by Traveller's Tales and published by LucasArts.

Development[]

After the success of the LEGO Star Wars games, LucasArts licensed the Indiana Jones franchise to Traveller's Tales. Developers experimented with LEGO Indiana Jones by creating the game on top of LEGO Star Wars. However, they decided to make the game from the ground up. Mentions of Nazism were absent in the game, instead being replaced with a generic enemy resembling Nazis, like in the LEGO sets. Shawn Storc of LucasArts said that they decided what parts of the films to make into levels by "look[ing] for the pivotal and memorable events in the films and either allow players to relive them through their interactions with the game, or use them to communicate the unique brand of humor that the team at Traveller's Tales does so well."[1]

The game was revealed as LEGO Indiana Jones: The Video Game at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2007. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga was released in November 2007 and featured Indiana Jones as an unlockable character along with a trailer for the game. A demo was released on May 13, 2008. The game was released on June 3, 2008, in North America, June 4 in Australia, and June 6 in Europe. The Mac OS X version was released on November 28. A sequel to the game, LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues, was released in 2009.

Features[]

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures features gameplay similar to the LEGO Star Wars games that preceded it, but with an Indiana Jones style. Powers like the force, lightsabers and blasters are absent, and instead there are swords, guns, and Indy's whip. The game follows the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. Minikits have been rebranded as Artifacts, Red Bricks are Parcels, and studs are called treasure. Some characters have fears of certain things, such as Indy's fear of snakes. Weapons and headwear can be picked up by the player. Platforming was expanded upon, with levels featuring new parkour objects such as ropes to swing on and bars to grab onto.

Trivia[]

  • This game marks the first occurrences of many things:
    • The first LEGO game from TT on console/PC to allow the player to use a custom character in the hub, but only in the Art Room of Barnett College when testing one.
    • The first LEGO game from TT to not be released in Japan. This also happened with the second game.
    • The first LEGO game where the characters have pupils in their eyes.
    • The first LEGO game from TT to automatically start the first level of the game after starting a new game which every game has done since then, except for LEGO Dimensions and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
    • The first LEGO game where the percentage of the game complete is shown in the pause menu.
    • The first where "Exit to Windows" was renamed "Quit to Windows".
    • The first LEGO game from TT to display the percentage count in the pause menu.
    • The first TT LEGO game on home console where the player cannot get attacked in the hub world and the only one with this distinction.
    • The first LEGO game from TT where the game does not show who the player will be controlling in the hub before the hub loads in. This would also be the case with every game after that except for LEGO Batman: The Videogame, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game.
    • The first LEGO game from TT on console/PC where all levels are character-based.
    • The first LEGO game in which melee attacks can be used to destroy objects.
    • The first LEGO game from TT where every playable character can appear in the hub and the only one with this distinction until LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and it has been possible in every game since then.
    • The first LEGO game from TT to have the cutscene after the credits of construction workers building the TT logo which would go on to be used in every LEGO game up until LEGO The Lord of the Rings.
    • The first LEGO video game to have an option for Screen V-Sync.
    • The first LEGO game to let a player use a water vehicle in a normal level.
    • The first LEGO game to have wall shimmying, ladders, swimming, bars that can be grabbed onto, dynamite, cuttable ropes, repairable objects, pickable objects, keys, bananas, digging, rope climbing, pulling and swinging, stealing weapons and headwear from fallen enemies, breakable blue objects, and to allow players to use a speed boost while using a road vehicle.
    • Excluding the DS version, this is the first of five LEGO games from TT on console/PC to not allow the player to use an aerial vehicle, the others being LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game, LEGO The Lord of the Rings, LEGO The Hobbit and LEGO Jurassic World.
  • This game has a trailer for the then-upcoming LEGO Batman: The Videogame.
  • The working title was LEGO Indiana Jones: The Video Game.
  • Not counting LEGO Dimensions, both this and the following game are the only LEGO games from TT on console/PC to be based on a non-Star Wars movie that came out before the PG-13 rating was created which are Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom, the latter of which was responsible for the creation of PG-13 rating.
  • If LEGO Dimensions is excluded, then both this and the following game are the only non-LEGO Star Wars games from TT to be based on a movie that's on Roger Ebert's Great Movies List which is Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • This and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean both overuse the word "treasure", most notably with the studs and extras.
  • This game is tied with LEGO The Lord of the Rings for the fewest number of female playable characters with four, behind LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy with only one if prequel characters are excluded.
  • On the Cover Art, Marion has lighter hair than in the game. She has a similar shade of hair in the DS version.
