LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is a 2010 action-adventure game based on the first four films in the Harry Potter series. The game was developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The sequel, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, was released in 2011.
Development[]
While developing a LEGO Harry Potter video game, the team decided to split the film series into two games, due to the amount of content in the films and books, and the film series itself not being finished yet during development. The first half would focus on the first four years at Hogwarts, with a planned release in 2010.
The developers took a different approach to the Harry Potter franchise compared to their previous adaptations such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. They focused on creating the world of Hogwarts, instead of simply having the player accessing levels through a hub. "Hogwarts is about the kids effectively going to school ... so, you have to ... distill everything back to, 'Ok, we're going to have to do something new.' There aren't just enemies patrolling around left, right, and center," said game director Arthur Parsons. Combat was less focused on in favor of Harry, Ron, and Hermione's journey through Hogwarts, and giving the school life.
Designing Hogwarts had the developers rewatch the movies multiple times to get the layout of the area. After picking the locations they wanted, they created their own map for the school. Objects were made to have different magical reactions when interacting with them to encourage exploration and give more detail to the world.[1]
Before an official announcement, there were already rumors of a LEGO Harry Potter game being made which date back to 2008. In June 2009, the game was officially confirmed by Warner Bros. as LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and was slated for a 2010 release. Advertising was put in place in-between the game's announcement and its launch in June 2010, such as promotional art and trailers. A gameplay demo was also released around the time of the game's launch.
In 2016, the game was remastered and put into the LEGO Harry Potter Collection along with Years 5-7 for PlayStation 4, and for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2018. In 2024, the collection was remastered again and put onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Features[]
The game adapts the first four films in the franchise, with the game centering around the Hogwarts hub. Each movie has six levels, along with gameplay in-between taking place in the Hogwarts hub, including lessons for spells. Spells are a major feature in the game, with wizard characters able to use different spells which have different special abilities. The player unlocks more spells as they progress through the story. Hogwarts was made to be a large semi-open world area, with it hosting lots of different areas and collectables such as Character Tokens, opposed to the previous installments' smaller hub areas. Outside of Hogwarts is also The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley, which function more like classic TT Games LEGO game hubs. Objects in the levels and open world can be interacted with to give magical reactions.

- This is the first of two LEGO games from TT to let the player have more than two characters in the hub, the other being the following game.
- Gold Bricks return for the first time since LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. They have appeared in mostly every TT Games LEGO game since then, having replacements such as Mithril Bricks in some games.
- This was the first LEGO video game to have animated character icons.
- However, the Wii version lacks animated icons.
- This was the second and last LEGO game to have a level creator.
- For some reason, a character's name does not appear when switching to them, but it does appear onscreen when the game is paused.
- This is the first TT LEGO game on home console where the player can lose studs in the hub world.
- This is the last LEGO game to have the extras Ice Rink and Silhouettes and the only one to have Singing Mandrake.
- The game began development in late 2008 early 2009 this is due to 2 icons found in a prototypes game files that are dated as 2008. (This prototype is incomplete it cannot run until it is fixed.) The games basis was likely a mix of LEGO Batman: The Videogame and LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues. While LEGO Indiana Jones 2 was likely based on LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.
