LEGO Bionicle: Quest for the Toa (also known as LEGO Bionicle and previously LEGO Bionicle: Tales of the Tohunga) is an action-adventure videogame released for Game Boy Advance in 2001, published by LEGO Software. The game was supposed to be a prequel to the cancelled PC game LEGO Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui. The story follows a Matoran named Takua (the player can change their name when starting a new game) whom the player can customize to their liking.
The B button jumps, the A button picks up medium sized objects and the L or R triggers toss smaller objects. The select button brings up the player inventory to equip items collected, as well as assign either the L or R trigger to items in order to use them. The game itself was rated 4.5/10 by critics,
Story[]
The story begins at the island of Mata Nui, once a paradise until Makuta attacked and cast a shadow on the island. The islanders went into hiding, hoping that one day, six heroes known as the Toa will arrive to save them and destroy Makuta. In the meantime, Takua unknowingly begins a quest of his own.
He begins by returning to his underground village from the beach, learning how to jump, pick up objects and toss fruit along the way. Takua is also introduced to green fruit that will replenish his health as they enter the village of Onu-Koro. Once inside, Takua is told by a guard that their village leader (or Turaga as its called in Bionicle), Whenua, has been snatched by a Vatuka Beast and is being held captive. He also discovers the village's Toa Stone has been stolen from their temple, but he cannot help until he obtains Vakama's Firestaff in order to see through the dark caves. One the staff is equipped, Takua enters the caves, taking out smaller enemies by tossing fruit at them and dodging falling stalagmites.
At the end of the cave is the Vakuta Beast, Takua easily takes it out by tossing fruit at it, being rewarded with a fruit that upgrades his health and energy meters upon defeating it. Takua must then push boulders over pressure plates in order to lower Whenua's cage and free him. Once the pair return to the village, Whenua explains that Makuta's cronies have laid sieged to the entire island, using beasts wearing his corrupted masks to take over the six villages. The Toa Stones have also been stolen by Makuta alongside some equipment and tools from the Turaga, so Takua must embark on a quest to retrieve the tools and his village's stone. Finally, the Vuata Maca Trees that provides the villages with food has been poisoned, and requires Vuata Maca crystals in order to heal it.
Takua later finds the Volo Lutu Launcher, which enables him to grab objects from a distance or attach to walls. Takua first heads north from the village to obtain the first crystal in a small alcove, deeper into the cave he takes an elevator to a higher part of the cave to retrieve the second crystal, the Toa Stone is also found in a secret cave blocked off by a dirt wall that requires a bomb to destroy. With both of them obtained, Takua returns to the village and gives both crystals to a green villager next to a pot filled with a bubbling green substance.
With the Toa Stone returned, Takua is able to move onto the other villages of Mata Nui, but first he must race Onepu. He does this by digging for eight crystals before Onepu finds them. Once he wins, Takua is able to exit Onu-Koro and enter the oceanside village of Ga-Koro, but he must first win a boat racing minigame. Along the way, Takua rescues the Turaga of Ga-Koro, Nokama, is given another health upgrade and is told to reclaim their village's Toa Stone from the southwest cliffside. Finding two more Vuata Maca crystals, Takua retrieves the second Toa Stone from the high cliffside and is given access to the next village.
Along the way, Takua obtains Whenua's Drill, enabling him to drill under certain rocks and stun giant enemies by drilling underneath them. Takua reaches the desert village of Po-Koro and as usual, he must complete a soccer based minigame in order to proceed, by destroying large rocks and kicking their debris into the goals of his opponents. Onewa's Hammer is the next piece of equipment gained, allowing Takua to destroy rocks into smaller stones for him to toss at enemies. Finally Takua frees Turaga Onewa and is able to reclaim their Toa Stone (as well as two more Vuata Maca crystals), moving onto the next village.
Takua makes it to the treetop village of Le-Koro, using his Launcher to tame a Kewa Bird and ride it around in another minigame. This time Takua and his bird must toss fruit at other villagers riding their birds while avoiding opponent fruits, the bird has five hit points before it falls. Upon winning, Takua must rescue Turaga Matau, obtain two Vuata Maca crystals and the Toa Stone. Matau has been captured by an eagle and Takua must first trick it into grabbing five boulders to knock out its chicks before being carried over into the nest to save the Turaga. After returning to the village, Takua is rewarded with Matau's Kau Kau Staff which can clear trees out of his path, allowing him to reclaim the Toa Stone from a wide tree trunk.
Takua is only at the outskirts of the snow covered Ko-Koro village when the guard challenges him to a snowball fight mingame, Takua is sliding around on an ice rink while tossing snowballs at his opponents until they become trapped in giant snowballs and are sent rolling around the rink. Takua then rescues Turaga Nuju and is rewarded with Nokama's Trident, enabling him to shoot enemies with water balls and is tasked with retrieving the Toa Stone as well as the Elemental of Melting for the village, as without the latter they would be unable to melt the ice into drinking water, as well as the usual Vuata Maca crystals for their tree.
Takua is now off to the volcanic village of Ta-Koro, where Turaga Vakama is there to greet him, however he doubts that Takua is capable of reclaiming the last Toa Stone despite all he's done so far. Before he can search for the stone however, the Turaga tasks Takua with purifying the village's poisoned water wells by finding an antidote. In order to traverse the land, Takua obtains the Lava Board to allow him to surf around on lava, starting a lava surfing minigame at the south end of the village. As well as the antidote, Takua reclaims the final two Vuata Maca crystals and discovers Vakama had been captured while he was out searching. Takua finds the key to the cage and is now able to find the final Toa Stone.
As Takua is on his way back, he partakes in another racing minigame, surfing down a lava flow while dodging rocks and falling stalagmites until he flies out of the volcano and lands in front of the temple where the Toa Stones are supposed to be kept at. The Turaga are all there to congratulate Takua for retrieving the stones, with them back in place, the legend of the Toa will live on, allowing the villagers to hope for the Toa to one day finally come.
Still images will then show Takua putting the stones in their place, causing a beam of light to emerge from the temple, sending him flying back onto the beach near Onu-Koro, this time showing the footsteps of the Toa arriving at his village.

Trivia[]
- The game was meant to be released alongside The Legend of Mata Nui, as the ending to this game sets up the Toa arriving on the island. Unfortunately the game was cancelled.
- The original title, Tales of the Tohunga, was renamed due to controversy with the Māori people, as Bionicle takes much inspiration from Polynesian culture. Tohunga is a real word in the Māori language and was seen as cultural appropriation on Lego's part. From then on, Bionicle would create their own made up language to replace the actual Māori words to avoid further controversy.
