LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures LEGO Batman: The Videogame LEGO Rock Band

LEGO Batman: The Videogame is a video game based on the popular Batman franchise and its LEGO theme, released for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC consoles in September 2008. The game was developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Development[]

After the success of the LEGO Star Wars videogames, TT Games searched for another franchise to adapt in LEGO form. The company talked to Warner Bros. about the Batman franchise, and this led to Warner Bros. purchasing TT Games in November 2007.

The developers found out that the Batman franchise's plethora of media makes it difficult to adapt in a vacuum. Warner Bros. and DC Comics allowed TT Games some freedom on the development of the game, however, and they weren't forced to make the game based on anything specific, such as a movie. They decided to create an original story for the game.

The success of LEGO Star Wars also prompted LucasArts to ask TT Games to make a LEGO Indiana Jones game, so most of the LEGO Batman team went to go work on LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. When the developers returned to LEGO Batman, they used some of the things they learned from making LEGO Indiana Jones to work on Batman.[1]

An early PlayStation 2 build of the game was shown off at conferences by the head of TT Games Publishing, Johnathan Smith. LEGO Batman: The Videogame was released on September 23, 2008.

Gameplay[]

LEGO Batman: The Videogame uses the same co-op beat-em-up platforming formula as most other LEGO games, now with locations, missions and characters themed around the Batman universe. A boomerang ability was added, which allows the player to target specific objects with a weapon such as a batarang.

Plot[]

All of Batman's worst enemies have escaped from Arkham Asylum and divided into three groups of five, each with plans to achieve a personal villainous goal. The game features two storylines:

  • A hero story featuring Batman and Robin fighting crime and villainy in Gotham City.
  • A villain story following the villains as they attempt to carry out their plan while avoiding the GCPD.

Trivia[]

  • This game along with LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars are the only games so far to feature Villains campaign (Excluding LEGO DC Super-Villains as it focuses solely on the villains).
    • In this game's case, it follows along the Villains of each Story Arc in what happens in the Heroes Campaign, meaning that the Villains story is a Prequel to the Heroes story.
  • This game marks the few of only a few things:
    • The only game to feature Suit upgrades for both Batman and Robin's Suits.
    • The only LEGO DC game to not have any non-Batman DC characters, although Superman is mentioned in one of the Datas.
    • The only LEGO game from TT not based on a Lucasfilm property to have the Adaptive Difficulty extra.
    • The only TT LEGO game on home console to have the extras of Always Score Multiply and Immune to Freeze.
  • A trailer for this game can be seen in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.
  • The game files mention the characters that would have been the ones playable with Extra Toggle which can be modded into the game with most of them being somewhat playable.
  • The aesthetic extras are the same as with LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, but without Fertilizer.
  • This game has the smallest character roster out of any LEGO game from TT on home console with 46 and 44 individuals.
  • The Wii version has a trailer for the game Guinness World Records.
  • This is the first LEGO game from TT for a lot of things:
    • The first to have an original story.
    • The first to not be based on a Lucasfilm property.
    • The first to not have a Star Wars character.
    • The first from TT to unlock characters right away when they enter codes.
    • The first to have a character with regenerating health which is Ra's al Ghul.
    • The first game to allow to allow the player to aim projectiles where they can only do so with Batarangs.
    • The first to have upgrades which returned in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, but with the added ability to disable them at any time.
    • Not counting the Use Old Save extra in LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, this is the first game on home console where the player cannot use every character in every hub world, the second being LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues.
    • The first to let the player skip cutscenes. In later games, they can only do so when seeing the same cutscene for a second time or more.
    • The first to have a combo multiplier to allow the player to get extra studs. It did not return until LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and has appeared in most games since then, except for LEGO City Undercover, LEGO The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie Videogame, LEGO The Hobbit and LEGO Jurassic World.
    • The first to have the extra of Extra Hearts.
    • The first to not have a soundtrack composed by John Williams.
  • The tag sound effect in this game is unique.
  • It is available in the LEGO Batman Trilogy game bundle.
  • The Japanese version uses a different font for the on-screen text.
  • This is the last LEGO game from TT on console/PC for several things:
    • The last LEGO video game to be released on the PlayStation 2.
    • The last game released on a PlayStation handheld console to be identical to the console/PC version as later ones would be identical to the DS and/or 3DS versions instead.
    • The last LEGO video game where the maximum stud total is 4 billion.
    • The last LEGO game to not have a split screen for co-op.
    • The last LEGO game in which the hub world only serves as a purpose for viewing minikits, accessing levels, buying stuff, entering codes, and viewing Hints/Data.
    • The last Wii version of a LEGO game where an unconnected Wii Remote slot for another player will display a message saying "Plus + to START" instead of "Connect Wii Remote".
    • The last LEGO game where filling up the Stud Bar gives the player a Superkit piece to unlock a bonus level.
  • The last data purchased reads "The End...?", teasing LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.
  • Because of many bugs in this game (because this game was most probably rushed, since it was released only 3 months after LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures), it is deemed to be one of the most broken LEGO games to date.
